Do you think about divorce seriously but you prefer to save your marriage? If you are worried about counseling and you want to get the best results out of couple’s therapy, here is all the information you need to find a suitable therapist for your family.
You have three basic categories of counselors based on their education and their training hours; their fees will go up with their expertise and training hours.
The higher level is the doctorate level Ph.D or Psy.D, these are the higher level counselor who have joined medical school for at least five years and they have completed at least 3000 hours of real therapy training under close supervision of an advance Clinical psychologist, they have to write a thesis also, A Ph.D degree holder is more academic in nature and have an experience in forensics and scholar experience side by side with his psychological therapy training.
The second level of counselor is the holder of Masters of social work, it can be abbreviated as: M.S.W. the majority of their training is based on applying the social theories to specific situations and case studies; they have the ability for freelance working and working within an organization or a firm.
The third and final category of counselors is the “family and marriage therapist” they have completed two years academic study and they are referred to as M.A or M.S , they have been trained to work closely with couples or with small groups, and they will usually have completed a 1500 hours of therapy under supervision, they might or might not have written a thesis.
If your insurance company is the one who will pay your therapy cost, then they will usually direct you to M.S.W or an M.S to cut expenses, you have to determine what kind of service you want to have because this is “saving a marriage” not “saving money” situation, you have to determine the importance and urgency of your case in order to take the right decision.
You have to consider the cost of a single session in addition to the overall cost of the complete therapy course, some therapist working with large groups have a flexible fee plan to match with the individual income of the client, in this case they might qualify or disqualify couples to their therapy sessions. Make sure to find therapist where you can qualify and make this experience more affordable to you.
You have also to read between the lines in the therapist policy and guidelines, some of these question are: will you be charged if you cancelled or missed a session, and could you postpone some of session during a planned vacation time, or is there anyone you can refer to if your therapist is out in vacation? What is the limit of phone support they can give you out of session time, can they accept your calls at office hours only or at home phone as well?
In short, you family counselor must show dedication and determination to save your marriage and work hard to help you stop divorce, if your therapist does not meet your needs, feel free to move on and find another one who can show more interest and dedication in helping you.
